We All Scream for Ice Cream
19 Jul, 2015
Everyone has heard of silly holidays that come up from time to time, like National Pancake Day, or National Sugar Cookie Day. There are, of course, the even sillier ones – such as Cow Appreciation Day. Or Thread the Needle Day.
But they are perfectly fun to celebrate, regardless, and we can’t think of a better one for summer than Sunday, July 19: National Ice Cream Day.
We have President Ronald Reagan to thank for this delicious holiday, which is celebrated annually on the third Sunday of July. It began as a Joint Resolution by Senator Walter Dee Huddleston of Kentucky on May 17, 1984. This is a legislative act that was signed into law by President Reagan on July 9th, 1984.
In Proclamation 5219, dated July 9, 1984, President Reagan said:
”Ice cream is a nutritious and wholesome food, enjoyed by over ninety percent of the people in the United States. It enjoys a reputation as the perfect dessert and snack food. Over eight hundred and eighty-seven million gallons of ice cream were consumed in the United States in 1983.”
The ice cream industry generates approximately $3.5 billion in annual sales and provides jobs for thousands of citizens. Indeed, nearly ten percent of all the milk produced by the United States dairy farmers is used to produce ice cream, thereby contributing substantially to the economic well-being of the Nation’s dairy industry.”
What would be one of the best ways to celebrate this holiday?
By coming down to the Pump House Parlor on the scenic grounds of Heidel House Resort & Spa to enjoy a cold treat. Choose from a variety of flavors such as Mackinac Island Fudge, Butter Pecan, Rum Black Cherry, Java Chunk, Monster Cookie, Sea Salt Caramel Nut and plenty more to make sundaes, malts and shakes, floats and cones with an array of toppings.
The Pump House Parlor is open to resort guests and the Green Lake area community daily during the summer season. On National Ice Cream Day, the Pump House will be open from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. See you there!
