Views of the (Half) Marathon
04 Sep, 2015
Many people are aware of the story behind the institution that we know as the marathon. A Greek messenger ran 25 miles from Marathon, to Athens, to relay the news of the Grecian victory over the invading Persian army in 490 BC. The question that comes next is why is a marathon 26.2 miles if the messenger only ran 25?
That answer comes from the year 1908 from the Olympics that were held in London. The Queen wanted the race to begin at Windsor Castle so that the youngest royals could see it start from their nursery window with the end of the race at the royals’ spectating box.
The distance so happened to be 26.2 miles.
Because the Queen wanted to be able to view the start of the race with the children, the runners were forced to trudge the extra distance and eventually, 26.2 became the official mileage for the marathon. Of course, the half marathon was created by halving the original number.
Luckily, these days, the view is not only about spectators cheering on the runners, but also what view the runners can see. The “13dot1” half marathon coming up right here in Green Lake caters to this concept with its stunning circuit that takes you by Dartford Bay, along wooded lanes, and through the rolling, emerald greens of the Golf Courses of Lawsonia. Not only are the runners able to enjoy the gorgeous landscape, but they also have the opportunity to admire some of the historic architecture and magnificent lake homes as they pass through.
