Ice Fishing in Green Lake, Wisconsin

30 Jan, 2015

Wisconsin winters can be brutal. We’re talking below-freezing temperatures, unexpected snow storms and slick roads. All of this feels less depressing when we can experience one of our favorite Wisconsin winter hobbies: ICE FISHING.

Green Lake is a winter wonderland during Wisconsin’s snowy season and a beautiful place to make lifelong memories. Whether you’re looking for a weekend away with the guys, planning a fun girl’s getaway or arranging a unique family trip, Heidel House Resort & Spa has an ice fishing package for you.

Even those who have been ice fishing before will find a unique twist to these packages, and that’s the guide service by Mike Norton’s Fishing and Hunting. This family has successfully guided fishermen for nearly 100 years!

Nortons-Fishing

Mike Norton’s great grandfather, John, founded the Norton fishing guide dynasty, followed by his son Joe, who rowed around the lake with visiting fishermen and then cooked their catch at the end of the day.

In 1946, Mike’s father, Captain Bud, started the ice shanty business. He was seen as so skilled at his trade that he was inducted into the Fishing Hall of Fame in 1984. After growing up in this successful family of fishermen, Mike was destined to become a skilled fishing guide. He has worked on Big Green Lake, the Fox River and Lake Michigan since his late twenties.

But it’s more than the fishing Mike advocates for. It’s a bonding experience, he says. “Many enjoy the intimacy that ice fishing offers,” said Norton. “It’s as much about the social interaction as the actual fishing. Friends enjoy sitting in a warm shack while having a few drinks and taking in the calm, tranquil snowy lake. You don’t need to know how to fish to enjoy ice fishing – it’s about the adventure and enjoying the company you are with.”

Teaming up with Mike Norton’s has led us to create some of the most authentic Wisconsin packages in Heidel House Resort history. Read more about these ice fishing packages below:

The Augers & Lagers Ice Fishing Package includes a comfortable overnight stay at the resort, a hot, hearty breakfast in the Sunroom, shuttling to and from a top fishing location on Big Green Lake and three hours of ice fishing led by Mike Norton’s Fishing and Hunting. Additionally, each person will receive all the fishing equipment needed (shanty, tackle and bait), a six pack of Leinie’s (or beer of choice), two water bottles, a freshly prepared box lunch and, if your day includes reeling in some good catch, Norton’s will clean your fish and package for you to take home.

Ladies, don’t feel shy. We’ve created a similar package (Drill Divas) just for you, and here’s how: Instead of beer, we’ll provide you with Apple Spiced Bourbon toddies or mulled wine and once your day on the ice comes to an end, you’ll head over to Evensong Spa for a 50-minute Labyrinth Heated Stone Massage and all-inclusive access to the waterfall whirlpool, eucalyptus steam room and relaxation room.
